Connectivity Is A Matter of Life And DeathThe Corridor Conservation Fund is an initiative to protect the crucial bits of habitat, known as "connectivity corridors," that allow elephants and other wildlife to move from one place to another. Elephant corridors around the world are threatened with deforestation and encroachment, both legal and illegal. The aim of the fund is to provide support for litigation, research, and other initiatives to protect these crucial areas.

Defend Dahaiyagala
The Dahaiygala (Da-HAI-ya-gala) Sanctuary is a little-known elephant "corridor".
|
It's a vital transit route for the hundreds of elephants circulating through famed Udawalawe National Park in Sri Lanka, allowing them to access seasonal food and scarce nutrients in other areas.
But in January 2021 local politicians and their henchmen attempted to seize portions of it for agribusiness, clearing and burning the forest.

We are working with partners on the ground to raise public awareness and help defend Dahaiyagala through data-driven legal enforcement.

Why is this needed?Animals need to move to survive.
Corridors provide links between the different locations where animals spend most of their time. Much as we depend on our ability to get to and from vital resources, such as grocery stores, so too do animals. But these connections are vital for allowing animals not only to meet their nutritional requirements, but also for breeding and dispersing from their birth places so that there can be gene flow among populations. When connectivity is severed, the resulting habitat fragmentation can spell disaster for animal populations. |
